As with the previous 2 years, the last night of Chanukah was celebrated at the home of Jackie and Alan. This Chanukah, the celebration fell on January 1st, when 31 people came along and parcipitated together. Some of the guests were new to our Community, coming from Ukraine, Japan, France and Ireland.
Tea, coffee and home-made cakes were enjoyed during the afternoon.
Before the short Chanukah service, Alan recited prayers for the IDF, for the October 7th. hostages and also said Kaddish as there were enough men present for a minyan. Then as darkness fell, everyone gathered around the poolside Menorah, prayers were recited, and the Menorah was lit. Following the usual rousing rendition of Moa Tzur, wine doughnuts and hot latkes with smetana and smoked salmon were enjoyed by everyone.
Next Chanukah, the last night falls on January 2nd!!
By the way, just for information, next Chanukah is the very rare happening of TWICE in one year, as this year was a leap year starting in December, and next time will also be in December, thus making it twice in one year!! Also, this Chanukah was only the fourth time since 1900 that it has happened to coincide with Christmas, the last time being in 2005, and next time will be 2035!
